It Is Never Too Late For Braces

As each New Year begins, many people take time to reflect on the year gone by. Some make resolutions to change or improve themselves; others make a list of things they hope to achieve in the coming 12 months. For many people who aren’t happy with their smiles, a new year can also bring new hope as they consider tuning up their smile with orthodontic treatment. 2011 could be just the year for you to improve your smile.
If you have crooked teeth or a “broken smile” from gaps or missing teeth, you don’t have to suffer any longer. There is a reason more and more adults are choosing to wear braces. A straighter, brighter smile can really go a long way in boosting your confidence. No matter what your age may be, you are likely only a few visits away from straight teeth, and a better smile.

The number of adults who are electing to improve their smile with braces is increasing. In fact, one in five orthodontic patients today is an adult. The truth is crooked teeth or spaces from missing teeth can cause real confidence problems. Some people even avoid smiling altogether to hide their smile. If this describes you or someone you know, then you will be happy to know that you can learn more about how Dr. Hilgers can “remodel” your smile by scheduling an appointment to discuss your particular needs. With your initial consultation, Dr. Hilgers will be able to recommend the right treatment for you to get your self-confidence back. 2011 just may be the right time you treat yourself to straight teeth and a smile that really shines! We look forward to working with you!!

Staying connected with Dr. Mike and Hilgers Orthodontics

At Hilgers Orthodontics, we embrace technology, whether it’s through the innovative orthodontic treatments we offer, our high-tech web site or our Facebook fan page. We love connecting with our patients online, whether it’s by sharing news on our blog or communicating ideas on our fan page. For social media to work, however, conversation is vital, and that’s why we invite you to join in and tell us what’s on your mind. Although social networks hugely popular these days, we know they're unpredictable and ever-changing.

While Dr. Mike Hilgers and our dedicated staff take a little time to research how to best use social media, we thought we’d ask you, our loyal patients: How would you like us to use our social networks? What would you like us to share on our blog? Send us your thoughts or give us a call! Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you for supporting Officer Murphy's family on Saturday!

Dr. Mike Hilgers and our entire staff at Hilgers Orthodontics would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting Travis Murphy's family on Saturday morning. We lost one of Arizona's finest and we need to continue to support his family! Saturday's event was a wonderful representation of our community's support!

Officer Travis P. Murphy was shot and killed when he confronted a suspect who had fled the scene of a shots fired call on May 26th. Officer Murphy had served with the Phoenix Police Department for four and a half years. He is survived by his wife, 2-year-old daughter, and 2-week-old son.

October is National Orthodontic Health Month at Dr. Hilgers' office!

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and a great time to remind our patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this month. Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers are some of the foods you should be avoiding this Halloween Season! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time!

Of course, Halloween doesn’t have to be completely treat-less. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have provided a helpful list of tips and braces-friendly recipes for the Halloween Season.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

By the way, Hilgers Orthodontics and Hilgers Pediatric Dentistry are proud to present "Princess and the Frog" next Friday, October 15 at the Goodyear, Arizona Ball Park - See you there! More info on our Facebook page!

Ask Dr. Mike: Which foods should I be avoiding?

Great question. There are a variety of foods Dr. Michael Hilgers wants you to avoid while you're wearing braces. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.

Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you should Avoid

• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots
• Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

If you have any questions on which foods you should be avoiding and why, we invite you to give us a call at (623) 935-3908 or ask one of our team members during your next visit at our convenient Goodyear office! We also definitely encourage you to check out this helpful article about eating with braces, courtesy of Parenthood.com.

Have a great rest of the week!

All the cool kids are doing it! From Hilgers Orthodontics

Braces, are in fact, “cool,” "hip" and—many would even say “fun” these days. These were among the findings of a nationwide survey this year of moms whose children are going through or have had orthodontic treatment. New technologies such as Invisalign and the Damon System, advanced computer software, color options, and even popular celebrities—Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Danny Glover, Serena Williams—sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and cool for today’s teens.

The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists for February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.

Different color options and the ability to change colors, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. That enthusiasm helps them to feel good about their orthodontic treatment, and may contribute to the success of treatment.

Has your child visited Hilgers Orthodontics for a consultation? If not, please give Dr. Mike Hilgers and team a call at (623) 935-3908 and let us help your child begin the journey to a gorgeous smile this summer!

Dr. Mike Hilgers discusses the importance of fluoride

There are so many ways you are already protecting your teeth throughout your treatment at Hilgers Orthodontics. You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your appliances from being damaged. But did you know there's another way to keep your teeth sparkling and healthy during your treatment?

Fluoride.

Yes, the mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay, can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties: topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and general mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides, however, are swallowed just like a dietary supplement. Orthodontists just like Dr. Mike Hilgers use in-office fluoride treatments to help protect the oral health of adults and children undergoing orthodontic procedures.

Fluoride used in Dr. Hilgers' office is often times stronger than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask Dr. Hilgers or team how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. Dr. Hilgers may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for in-home treatment.

When choosing your own fluoride product, be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of approval. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness.

"Hey, Dr. Mike! What, exactly, is malocclusion?"

Malocclusion, or what Dr. Mike Hilgers and our staff call “bad bite,” is the improper alignment of teeth and/or jaws. You see, when your teeth and jaws are not properly aligned, it may impact your bite, the ability to properly care for your teeth, your gum tissue health and, yes folks, even your appearance.

Dr. Mike will tell you that untreated malocclusion can - and does - lead undesirable mouth problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, or even chipped and cracked teeth. The most common solution for malocclusion, of course, is orthodontic treatment. The actual course of treatment, including the length of time you will require braces, will be determined by the severity of your malocclusion. The goal of your treatment at Hilgers Orthodontics is to move your teeth into the proper position and correct any misalignment in the jaw.

You can be sure that Dr. Mike uses the most advanced technology in the field in order to ensure that you receive the best possible results from your treatment. If you have any questions about malocclusion, please give us a call and we’ll try to answer any questions you may have! Dr. Hilgers is Goodyear's trusted, experienced orthodontist, who genuinely cares about his patients!

Happy May Day!

Dr. Mike wants to know: Do you know where your retainers are?

If you've recently completed your treatment at Hilgers Orthodontics, our staff would like to take this time to congratulate you (if we haven't already)! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Mike will provide—or has provided you—with retainers.

Retainers are important because after braces are removed, teeth may shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization and are designed to hold your pearly whites in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Here are some things to remember when you receive your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.
* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).

Give us a call if you have any questions and again, congratulations on being braces-free!

10 Facebook tips for parents, from Hilgers Orthodontics

We know parents tend to sign up for Facebook accounts and ‘friend’ their kids, often as a way to keep an eye on their online activities. But then what? Many parents in this digital age are still lost when it comes to monitoring their kids online.

Last fall, author Vicki Courtney wrote a helpful post on the things parents should and shouldn’t do while surfing through their kids’ Facebook profiles. Dr. Mike and the staff thought you might benefit from reading Vicki’s interesting piece.

Here is the list of the “Top Ten Facebook No-Nos for Parents,” designed specifically for those moms and dads who aren’t sure whether they’ve crossed the line in monitoring their kids’ presence online.

We hope you find this post informational. Please let us know what you think!

Ask Dr. Mike: Why the Damon™ System?

Dr. Mike Hilgers and our dedicated team are pleased to offer our patients The Damon® System. Damon braces allow your teeth to move more comfortably and easily than traditional braces. Thanks to these innovative new braces, achieving your perfect smile will be faster and easier than you ever thought possible.

You're probably thinking, "All right, Dr. Mike. Give me the specifics on how Damon braces are an advantage."

Time-Saving

Damon's innovative technology of self-ligating braces saves you time in orthodontic treatment. The Damon system allows for fewer trips to Hilgers Orthodontics, as well as faster movement of your teeth than with traditional braces. The light forces applied by Damon braces are "biologically compatible" meaning that they work with your body for gentler and quicker tooth movement.

Comfortable

Damon System braces have a unique slide mechanism that allows Dr. Hilgers to use far lighter forces to move teeth to their correct positions. That makes your treatment not only shorter, but it is also far more comfortable.

Because of its unique sliding door, the Damon bracket allows us to use high-tech, light-force wires to achieve tooth movement. This means less pressure on your teeth for more comfortable treatment. Not every orthodontist uses Damon self-ligating braces. The reason Dr. Hilgers does is simple: it means your experience in uncovering your radiant new smile will be more comfortable and convenient than ever.

To learn more about the Damon System, or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hilgers, please give us a call.

Yelp reviews for Dr. Mike and Hilgers Orthodontics

Last week, Dr. Mike and our team shared a few generous reviews written by our patients. This morning, we noticed a new patient review on our Yelp listing. Here's what the patient - Ken W. - had to say:

As an ER physician, I expect a lot from other healthcare providers (especially when it comes to my children), and I have the highest respect for Hilgers Orthodontics. I recently moved from Arizona to Chicago, but I expect that when my next kid needs braces, I'll be returning to Arizona to visit Dr. Mike again.

The office is a fun environment, the staff is friendly, and Dr. Mike is one of the most highly trained orthodontists (he trained at Yale). I have great confidence that he yields the best results, and that going out to Goodyear for treatment by Dr. Mike would be totally worth it.

If you have any reviews of Hilgers Orthodontics you'd like to share with the world, please take some time and review us on Yelp. Or, you could always write up a review on our Google Local page. Either way, Dr. Mike and our team appreciate our patients and their testimonials! Happy Monday!
